4 PEANUT BUTTER MEALS FOR BABIES

We've rounded up four fun, super-easy peanut butter baby meals that you can make - in less than five minutes!

Before we dive in, let's answer the 'peanut question'.

When can my baby start having peanuts?

Whole peanuts, chunky or spoonfuls of peanut butter are choking hazards and a no-no for your baby! You can however feed your baby with peanut products but in accordance with the recommendations of the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS). According to the society, here's what you need to know about the specific timing for the early introduction of allergenic foods to high-risk infants:

  • Feed your baby with non-choking forms of allergenic foods such as peanuts and eggs around 6 months of age, but not before 4 months since this can prevent food allergies in high-risk infants.
  • This recommendation is in line with the Addendum Guidelines for the Prevention of Peanut Allergy.

Warning:

You SHOULD follow the above guidelines because peanut butter is the number one cause of fatal and near-fatal food allergic reactions. And always consult your physician about the early introduction of allergenic foods to your baby before you do.

Peanut Butter Puree

A  fluffy, no-cook puree is a great way to start your baby off on peanut butter. It's packed with nutrients such as fats and protein. And it's so easy-peasy -  all you need is some natural creamy peanut butter and water.

Tips:

  • You can use baby formula or breast milk in place of water.
  • You can add some fruits such as apples, sweet potatoes or bananas to sweeten the puree.

Peanut Butter Puffs

Store-bought peanut butter puffs are also a fave for parents looking forward to adding peanut butter to their baby's menu. There are so many brands you can choose from - Bamba Puffs, Puffworks Baby and Mission Mighty Me (perfect for 9-month old babies who have developed their pincer grasp). Puffs are easy feed (they dissolve faster in your baby's mouth) and are healthy to snack on.

Peanut Butter Toast

Just a thin spread of peanut butter on a slice of lightly toasted bread is also another way to introduce your baby to peanut butter. It's perfect for weaning babies.

Tips:

  • Cut the toast into thin slices your baby can easily pick up to eat. As a rule of thumb, slices should be as big as your finger so your baby can't put a whole slice in his or her mouth.
  • Make sure the bread is lightly toasted so it doesn't stick to the roof of your baby's mouth.

Peanut + Banana + Oatmeal Mix

The ingredients that make up this mix should tell you that it's packed with nutrients. Oats are rich in fibre, bananas are a powerhouse for Vitamins B6, C, potassium and manganese, while peanut butter will give your baby the protein he or she needs. It's a scrumptious blend that you can serve to a 6-month plus baby.
