6. MILK

Milk and its by-products (cheese, yogurt, etc.) are a must-eat for winter. Why? Because they are a powerhouse for vitamins A and B12, proteins and calcium. These nutrients fortify the body so you can survive the cold weather. However, if you must drink warm milk, opt for skimmed or semi-skimmed milk instead of full-fat milk to prevent increasing your calorie intake. And if you are lactose intolerant, you can do lactose-free milk or other milk alternatives such as almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, or hemp milk.

5. CHEESE, EGGS AND FISH

This trio is another healthy choice as far as winter foods are concerned. Also packed with vitamins A and B12, they help boost the immune system. You need these nutrients to fight off colds, flu and allergies, which are very common during winter. Moreover, they help prevent tiredness, which most people experience during winter due to the season's lack of sunlight caused by its shorter days.

4. SOUP

Nothing compares to having a hot chicken broth made with veggies on a cold winter night. Taking in soups made with water as its base and lots of veggies is one way to supercharge your body. For extra goodness, you can have it with some whole-grain crackers. But avoid having too much salt, beef and cream in your winter soups to get the most out of them.

3. PORRIDGE

Porridge should be your go-to breakfast for this winter. It's slow-release and will keep you energized until you are ready to have your lunch. It will also give you that full feeling, which keeps cravings in between meals at bay. You can bring in some variety to your breakfast by topping up your porridge with nuts, seeds and fruits.

2. ROOT VEGGIES

winter foods

During winter, most veggies are out of season. But you will find root veggies in abundance - turnips, carrots and sweet potatoes. You can eat these in various ways - boiled, roasted or raw to get your healthy dose of vitamins A, C, and beta carotene. Plus, the energy produced by your body to digest these foods keeps you warm.

1. CAULIFLOWER AND BROCCOLI

winter foods

If there is any season you are more likely to get sick, it's winter. Viruses live longer in cold temperatures and low humidity. Besides, during winter, people stay indoors longer and their risk for infection increases. You must include superfoods such as cauliflower and broccoli in your winter diet to boost your immunity because these contain vitamin C, the body's natural immune booster.
